Sambhal Violence: Zafar Ali Sent to Moradabad Jail

Zafar Ali Transferred to Moradabad Jail Following Sambhal Violence Arrest

In a significant development related to the violence that took place in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, on November 24, 2024, Zafar Ali, the president of the Shahi Jama Masjid management committee, has been arrested and moved to Moradabad jail. His detention has raised concerns among his family and supporters regarding his well-being and the fairness of the legal proceedings against him.

Background of the Incident

The unrest in Sambhal began during a court-mandated survey of the historic Shahi Jama Masjid to investigate claims of a temple existing within the premises. On November 24, 2024, violent clashes erupted as the survey team attempted to carry out its work. The conflict resulted in four deaths and left many injured, including 29 police officers.

Zafar Ali’s Arrest and Charges

Zafar Ali was initially taken into custody on November 25, 2024, a day after the violence, but was released after questioning. However, on March 23, 2025, he was re-arrested following a four-hour interrogation at the Sambhal Kotwali Police Station. He was then presented before the Chandausi court, which ordered a two-day judicial remand, leading to his transfer to Moradabad jail.

Ali faces multiple charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Sections 230 and 231, which pertain to fabricating false evidence with the intent to convict someone—a crime that carries the potential of life imprisonment.

Concerns Raised by Family

Ali’s family has expressed deep concerns about his treatment in custody. His brother, Tahir Ali, has alleged that Zafar is being denied essential medical care and is at risk while in jail. Tahir also claimed that the family has not been allowed to meet him, stating, “The jail authorities are treating him like a hardened criminal. His life is in danger.”

Official Response to Allegations

In response to the allegations, Moradabad district jail officials have denied any mistreatment. Jailor Dr. Suresh Kumar Mishra dismissed the claims, stating, “The accusations are baseless. Zafar Ali does not have any health issues in jail. We have a medical center with two doctors on duty, and all necessary medicines are available.”

Political Reactions and Legal Developments

The arrest has sparked reactions from political figures, including Samajwadi Party MP Zia-ur Rahman Barq. Barq has criticized the authorities for their handling of Ali’s case and raised concerns over the fairness of the judicial process. Notably, Barq himself, along with Sohail Iqbal, son of six-time SP MLA Iqbal Mehmood, has been named in the same First Information Report (FIR) linked to the November violence.

Ali’s legal team has announced plans to file a bail application with the district judge in an attempt to secure his release while the investigation continues. Meanwhile, authorities have increased security in the area, with police and district officials conducting foot patrols to prevent any unrest.
