Nainar Nagendran Submits Nomination for Tamil Nadu BJP

In a noteworthy political move, senior BJP leader Nainar Nagendran has officially filed his nomination for the upcoming elections in Tamil Nadu. His decision comes at a crucial juncture, attracting significant attention for its timing and the potential implications for the state’s political scenario.

Political Background

Nagendran, a seasoned politician, currently represents the Tirunelveli constituency in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. Over the years, he has emerged as a key figure in the BJP’s southern strategy, contributing to efforts to expand the party’s base in the state.

Early Nomination Filing

Nagendran submitted his nomination papers on March 12, 2021, ahead of the BJP’s formal candidate announcement. He filed for the Tirunelveli Assembly constituency, accompanied by his youngest son, Vijay. The nomination was handed over to Returning Officer V. Sivakrishnamoorthi. Explaining his early move, Nagendran referred to the auspiciousness of the “new moon day.”

Internal Party Reaction

The unexpected early filing stirred unease within the BJP, as it bypassed the usual process followed by the party. Senior members voiced their disapproval over the lack of coordination, particularly due to the absence of BJP and AIADMK leaders during the submission. This sparked discussions about internal communication and strategic planning within the party ranks.

Legal Challenge and Court Ruling

A petition challenging the validity of Nagendran’s nomination was soon filed, alleging omissions and non-disclosures. However, the Madras High Court dismissed the plea, stating that it was filed too late, especially with election processes already well underway.

Candidate Shift and Election Strategy

Initially announced as the BJP candidate for the Tuticorin constituency in the 2024 elections, Nagendran was later shifted to contest from Tirunelveli. This last-minute decision is believed to be a strategic move by the BJP to capitalize on Nagendran’s strong local presence and political influence in the region.

Asset Disclosure

As per electoral norms, Nagendran filed an affidavit detailing his financial assets. Between March 2021 and March 2024, his family’s net worth increased by 19.54%, rising from ₹26.71 crore to ₹31.94 crore. The disclosures included holdings in gold, property, and other business investments.
